The basics

What is NDIS?

The NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is designed to provide funds and support for people with disabilities living in Australia. This program was started by the Gillard Labour Government on the 1st of July in 2013, beginning with a trial called the NDIS Launch and then implemented in Australia on July in 2016.

NDIS was the first national scheme introduced by the Government of Australia for people with disabilities and is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which approves the payments for individualized support packages and creates individualized plans based on the requirements of participants. It helps over 500,000 Australians with disabilities by providing funding and support for the services they need.

How Does NDIS Work?

The NDIS process might seem overwhelming at first, but by understanding its processes, benefits, and eligibility criteria, you can confidently navigate and access the support you need.

1

Eligibility Assessment

First, you check if you’re eligible based on age, residency, and the nature of your disability.

2

Creating Your NDIS Plan

If you’re eligible, you’ll meet with an NDIS planner to discuss your goals and the kind of support you need. This becomes your personalized NDIS plan.

3

Accessing Supports & Services

Once your plan is approved, you can start using your NDIS funding to pay for services that help you achieve your goals.

Who Can Access NDIS Support?

NDIS provides funding and support for individuals with disabilities to live more independently with the necessary support and care they need. To apply for the NDIS funding, an individual must satisfy the following eligibility requirements:

Age

You must be under 65 years old when you apply.

Residency

You need to be an Australian citizen residing in Australia or possess a protected special category visa.

Disability

You must have a permanent and significant disability that impacts your daily life.
